Ryan is the recipient of the 2017 Southwest American Power Dispatchers Association (SWAPDA) Scholarship. He is a native of California who attended the Los Angeles Technical Trade College and the College of Canyons and landed a job with ATT as a Premise Technician from 2006-2009. In this position he assisted in the installation of residential and commercial telecommunication networks for the fiber optic network.
From 2009 until 2014 he became a Pipefitter with the City of Burbank where he installed, replaced, and repaired water main, services, meters, valves, hydrants, and associated water distribution equipment while performing excavation, shoring, cribbing, and soil compaction work and responded to consumer inquiries and problems in the field while training and directing a crew of workers as required. With his sights on grid operations, he knew he had to move into a field that would help build the foundation of his electrical knowledge. In 2014, he moved into a position of greater responsibility with the City of Burbank as an Electrician Apprentice where he installed and maintained electrical components within substations, power plants, water facilities and streetlights.
In April 2017, Ryan was enrolled into the IncSys Academy and he completed all of the Power System Operations Courses (PSOC) in February 2018, and then was enrolled into the NERC Preparation course and passed the NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification exam in June 2018.
We want to congratulate Ryan Sanderson for receiving the SWAPDA 2017 Scholarship, and congratulate him for passing the NERC Certification exam. We are proud of your success and allowing our scholarship to help shape your future goals and objectives in the utility industry.
“Words from Ryan”
In August of 2018, I promoted to the position Power System Operator 1. As a trainee, I learned all aspects of grid operations, from high voltage switching, dispatching and real time scheduling. After an intensive one-year training program I was assigned to a shift and became a Power System Operator 2. I have taken all that I learned from IncSys and especially the simulation training along with me, and it has contributed to my success as a power system operator. The training played a pivotal role in allowing me to get into the industry and I am grateful for the opportunity the SWAPDA and IncSys provided to help this career path to become a reality for me.
