Robert Hughes Story

Robert Hughes story:

Robert joined the United States Navy in December 2014 and attended the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command and during his training cycle, he encountered some unexpected circumstances which did not allow him to complete the entire Nuclear Power Prototype course in order to become rated as a Nuclear Electronics Technician.  Since Robert was not able to complete the Nuclear training program, the Navy offered him the opportunity to complete his obligated service contract by allowing him to cross into another rating that would help the needs of the Navy and was then rated to become a Navy Culinary Specialist.

As a Culinary Specialist, he worked for the Admirals Staff and qualified as a Maintenance Person and Work Center Supervisor, playing an intricate role in the supervision and maintenance of shipboard equipment.  While assigned in this capacity, he still remained focused on his passion in the power industry, therefore he continued to pursue his education in the electrical industry by completing many of the courses the Navy was able to offer him through Nonresidential training and E-learning courses.

When he separated from the Navy under Honorable conditions in December 2018, he made the decision to continue his pursuit in his post-graduate education and enrolled into OSU and started pursuing his degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology, in conjunction with starting his Power4Vets journey.  Robert graduated from the Power System Operations Courses (PSOC) in May 2019, and then he started studying for the NERC exam and then had to take a break to finish some of his studies at OSU, and then reengaged back into the NERC Preparation course material and successfully obtained his NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification in October 2019.

Robert is an Oregon hometown native and emphasized that his desire was to obtain job in Oregon so our IncSys Human Resource team connected him to our network of contacts at Pacificorp and in November 2019 he was made a job offer as an Associate Generation Operator.

Congratulations to Robert Hughes for being and believing in the Power4Vets program and remaining committed to finishing the program and we are truly proud of your success in your new career in the utility industry!
